Trademarks
Trademark protection in Jordan is governed by the Trademarks Law. Registration is available through the Industrial Property Protection Directorate at the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Jordan follows the Nice Classification and operates a first-to-file system, which makes early registration critical. Once registered, a trademark is protected for ten years and is renewable indefinitely. We routinely advise clients on clearance, filing, oppositions, and renewals.
Copyright
Copyright in Jordan is governed by the Copyright Protection Law and arises automatically on creation, without the need for registration. However, voluntary registration with the National Library provides useful evidence in enforcement proceedings. Copyright protects literary, artistic, musical, and software works for the author's lifetime plus fifty years.
Patents and Industrial Designs
Patents are granted under the Patents Law for inventions that are new, involve an inventive step, and are capable of industrial application. Protection lasts twenty years from the filing date. Industrial designs are protected under a separate regime, and both patents and designs require formal examination and registration.
Enforcement and Anti-Counterfeiting
Registered rights are enforceable through civil actions, criminal complaints, and customs recordation to intercept counterfeit goods at the border. Jordanian courts have shown a willingness to grant injunctions, order seizures, and impose damages and criminal penalties on infringers.
